Why is your hair falling out?

Chemo contains cytostatics that attack cancer cells, but also healthy, fast-growing cells such as hair follicles. Depending on the medication, there are three possibilities:

• Hair becomes thinner and duller
• Complete hair loss over the entire body.

This process of hair loss often starts 2–3 weeks after the first treatment. Cold cap therapy (cooling the scalp during chemo) can sometimes help.

Is it coming back?

Usually yes. Within a few months the hair grows back, sometimes in a different color or structure. Permanent changes are rare.

What can you do?

Are you receiving radiotherapy on your scalp, because of a brain tumor or brain metastases? Your doctor has probably already explained to you that hair loss is one of the side effects of radiotherapy. The hair falls out on the irradiated area(s) of your scalp. This happens gradually. After a few weeks you will notice this: there is more and more hair in your brush. The hair only falls out on the area that is irradiated. The hair around it remains intact. This also applies to your eyebrows, eyelashes and possibly beard hair. However, if it concerns brain metastases, the entire scalp is irradiated.

Causes of hair loss during radiation

Radiotherapy uses 'radiation generated with high electrical energy'. The radiation penetrates deeply and causes damage to the tumor cells, but also to the healthy cells. However, healthy cells recover better from it. This also applies to the healthy cells of the hair follicles. Unfortunately, these healthy cells can also be permanently damaged; this depends on the duration and intensity of the radiation.

Is it over?

That is uncertain. Often yes, although it can easily take several months to sometimes half a year. Often the hair is thinner afterwards than before. If you have been irradiated for a long time (with a high dose), there can be permanent damage and the hair does not grow back or does not grow back completely.

Solutions

Be gentle with your hair and scalp during the treatment. Choose mild shampoo and unscented care products. Stay out of the sun. In case of itching and skin irritation, you can use calendula ointment; avoid scratching.
