Alopecia Androgenetica - hereditary hair loss

Androgenetic alopecia is the most common form of hair loss. In men and women. How do you deal with it?

Androgenetic alopecia: what can you do?

This form of hair loss is common, especially in men but also in women to a lesser extent. In men it often starts on the forehead, in women on the crown or parting. The hair becomes thinner and falls out. Small, deformed (exclamation mark) hairs remain. The hair roots disappear, and new hair does not grow back.

Normal, but not easy

Because so many people have to deal with it, it is often seen as 'normal'. Hair loss is just part of growing older. Yet many people struggle with it. Men find themselves less attractive or older. Women often find it even more difficult, because it is less accepted. Sometimes it starts at a young age. The impact on your self-image can be great, the process is irreversible.

Treatments and their limitations

There are many products and treatments, but no real solution. The effect is usually temporary and side effects are common. Scalp massages feel more pleasant than sprays, but do not solve the problem. Hair transplants are expensive and often do not work well in women.

Solutions

In the initial phase, a hair powder helps to hide thin spots. Products such as sprays to stimulate blood circulation, expensive hair cosmetics give little to no result. For more serious hair loss, a hairpiece or crown extension is a solution. This fits perfectly with your own hair and looks natural. It is firm, feels safe, so you don't have to worry.

Together we will look at which hair extension suits you best. Sometimes a complete hairpiece is necessary. With us you will have all the time and space to make choices that you feel comfortable with.

Alopecia Areata - round bald spots

Alopecia areata: bald spots. Often it goes away. Alopecia areata Alopecia areata can happen to anyone. Usually it goes away. Sometimes it doesn't. What can you do about bald spots?

What is alopecia areata?

Alopecia areata means 'patchy baldness': round or oval bald spots between your hair. The skin is normal, without itching or flaking. It occurs at any age, in healthy people. It is estimated that 1 in 100 to 1 in 2000 people will be affected.

Is it over?

In 80% of people, hair grows back normally, but the course is erratic. It can disappear spontaneously and also come back. Sometimes it changes into more serious forms such as alopecia totalis or universalis.

Coping with alopecia

Alopecia does not affect your health, but it can be emotionally taxing. Sadness, uncertainty and frustration are understandable.

Causes

The cause lies in the immune system. Your body attacks the hair roots, causing no or brittle hair to grow. The link with stress has been mentioned a lot, but not scientifically established.

Treatment

From lotions to corticosteroids, there are many treatments, but no proven solutions. Sometimes something helps at first and then the hair loss flares up again. This varies from person to person. Because hair roots remain, the hair can grow back - the longer it takes, the less chance of hair returning.

Practical solutions

Small spots can often be camouflaged well. A smart hairdresser knows what to do. For larger or visible spots, it is smart to first seek advice before spending a lot of money on a hair extension.

Our advice at MoveHs Hairsolutions

  • Are the spots temporary? Use camouflage such as eye shadow or colored powder.
  • Are there a lot of them? Consider a ready-made hairpiece.
  • Is there one large, permanent spot? Then a custom hairpiece can be the solution.

Alopecia Totalis - loss of all hair on the head

Alopecia Universalis - All Body Hair

Alopecia universalis stands for: complete hair loss. In addition to your head hair, the hair roots elsewhere on your body are also affected.

What is alopecia universalis?

Alopecia universalis means complete hair loss. Not only hair on the head falls out, but also eyebrows, eyelashes, armpit, pubic and body hair. Even fine downy hairs disappear.

Recovery possible?

The course is erratic. Sometimes hair grows back partially, sometimes not. Spontaneous recovery is possible, but the longer it takes, the smaller the chance of recurrence.

Causes

Alopecia universalis is caused by a malfunction in the immune system. The hair roots become inflamed and stop growing. Why this happens is unknown. Stress is often mentioned, but is not scientifically proven.

Hairpieces

With alopecia universalis, investing in a good hairpiece is wise. Real hair is popular, but there are other good options. Get well informed about hair types, frames, attachment methods, and reimbursements through your health insurance.

Eyebrows

Eyebrows define your face. With permanent make-up (PMU) you can have eyebrows placed. The pigment fades slowly, and touch-ups are necessary. Choose a shape and color that suits your appearance and hairpiece.

Eyelashes

Eyelashes are harder to replace. Glue-on lashes are possible with the right glue. Eyeliner or PMU also helps to camouflage the lack of eyelashes.

What does MoveHs Hairsolutions do for you?

We help you choose a suitable hairpiece, give advice on reimbursements and work with certified PMU specialists. For the application of hair extensions, eyelashes, PMU and tips you can visit our open days. Our hair psychologist Saskia helps if you struggle with the psychological impact of alopecia.

Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia - receding hairline

Frontal fibrosing alopecia is most common in women over 40. What are the causes and how do you deal with it?

What is frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA)?

Frontal fibrosing alopecia, or FFA for short, is a rare condition that mainly occurs in women during/after menopause. The cause is unknown. The hair follicles along the face/forehead become inflamed and the hair falls out, in a symmetrical band from left to right across the head. The eyebrows may also fall out. FFA is a rare form of the common skin condition lichen planopilaris. In both cases, hair loss is caused by inflamed hair roots, but with 'normal' lichen planopilaris, hair loss starts around the crown. In both cases, the skin may feel irritated or burning, but this is not necessarily the case.

Is it over?

Unfortunately, no. The hair loss usually starts at the eyebrows or with a band from the forehead. Due to scar tissue in the hair follicles, the hair does not grow back. The causes of FFA and lichen planopilaris are unknown.

Solutions for frontal fibrosing alopecia

Dermatologists sometimes prescribe medication that could slow down the process somewhat (whether it really works is not proven). However, these are all 'strong' agents with side effects, such as corticosteroids, prednisone and cyclosporine (source: dermatologist website huidziekten.nl).

PCOS - hereditary ovarian disorder

Thin hair and scalp problems under the influence of hormones.

What is PCOS?

PCOS stands for (P)oly(C)ysteus-(O)varium(S)yndrome. It is a common condition of the ovaries. About 5 to 10 percent of women suffer from this hereditary condition. PCOS involves an imbalance in hormone production, which can lead to various complaints. Characteristic is the development of fluid-filled blisters (cysts) in the ovaries. Common symptoms are irregular menstruation and less frequent menstruation, acne and reduced fertility.

Causes of PCOS

PCOS is a hereditary condition. It is also usually associated with being overweight, and with it a greater risk of diabetes.

PCOS and hair growth

PCOS also affects hair growth. Excess hair can appear on unwanted areas (such as the chin), while on the scalp – under the influence of testosterone – there is thin hair. The scalp can be oily and sensitive.

Solutions for PCOS Hair Problems

Are you suffering from thinning hair due to PCOS? With a hairpiece or crown extension you can replenish your hair. For unwanted excess hair on your face or elsewhere you can go to a beauty salon or skin therapist.

The advice of MoveHs Hairsolutions

With little hair loss, hair powder with fibers can hide thin spots. If it gets worse, a hairpiece is a better choice. Women with thin hair due to PCOS often benefit from a crown extension or hairpiece that seamlessly blends in with their own hair. This way, the transition remains invisible and looks natural. You also don't have to worry about whether it will stay in place.

MoveHs Hairsolutions offers two attachment methods and chooses the best option together with you. In case of hair loss over almost the entire scalp, a full hairpiece is often the most suitable. Whatever you choose, we will give you all the time to decide calmly and feel good about your choice.

Eyebrows & Lashes - Are Thinning or Falling Out?

Are your eyelashes and/or eyebrows falling out? Are they getting thinner, or are there pieces missing, or are they falling out completely? This can have several causes.

Causes

The loss of eyebrows and eyelashes, also known as madarosis , can be caused by alopecia, skin conditions, thyroid problems, medication or chemotherapy. Sometimes hairs do not grow back after epilation. Age also plays a role: as you get older, they often become thinner.

Is it about ?

After chemo or stopping medication, hair often grows back. With alopecia or other conditions, that chance is smaller. The longer it takes, the smaller the chance of recovery.

Solutions

Eyebrow or eyelash loss can be emotionally difficult. There are no miracle cures, but there are solutions such as permanent make-up and glue-on eyelashes and eyebrows. This can help camouflage the loss.

Advice from MoveHs Hairsolutions

Our PMU specialist will gladly show you what is possible. Miracle cures do not exist, but solutions do. During a free intake you will discuss your wishes and receive personal advice. You are not alone.

Diffuse Alopecia - also known as Telogen Efflufium

Diffuse alopecia is a form of temporary hair loss. What are the causes and how do you deal with it?

What is diffuse alopecia

Is your hair suddenly thinning and is the scalp showing through everywhere? Then you have diffuse alopecia (also called 'telogen effluvium'): no bald spots but scattered hair loss.

The loss is related to a disruption in the hair growth process. Normally, each hair has a growth phase (of several years), a transition phase (two weeks) and a resting phase (several months) and then falls out. In the resting phase, a new hair is already developing in the hair follicle, which grows out through the skin after about three weeks. Approximately 80 percent of your hair is normally in the growth phase. With diffuse alopecia, this process is disrupted. Hairs stop growing, enter the resting phase en masse and fall out.

Is it over?

Yes, it usually recovers completely once the cause is addressed.

Causes of diffuse alopecia

Your hair may suddenly (temporarily) thin out as a result of

  • side effects of medication usemedicines
  • a metabolic disorder (thyroid, pituitary)
  • disease
  • pregnancy
  • malnutrition/vitamin deficiency

Solutions for diffuse alopecia

Consult your doctor. First, the medical cause must be determined and then the doctor can determine how best to address the hair loss.

Never stop taking your medication without first consulting your doctor.

MoveHs advice for diffuse alopecia

Most of the time, your hair will recover completely from diffuse alopecia. For temporary hair loss, a ready-made hairpiece is often an obvious, affordable solution. After all, it will pass, so it is just a matter of bridging the time.

You can choose a hairpiece that looks as much like your own hair as possible or take the opportunity to try something different. Feel free to come by to discover what suits you; we will take the time to think along with you.

Our advice

Depending on the shape you have, there are all sorts of solutions possible. We are happy to think along with you. In general:

  • As long as the alopecia is restless and changeable, it is a waste to spend a lot of money on hairpieces or extensions.
  • In case of severe and long-term alopecia, a hairpiece or hairpiece is a good investment. We are happy to show you what is possible and give you all the time to choose the solution that you feel most comfortable with.
  • Our intakes are always completely without obligation and we do not oblige you to anything.
